Specialty Foundation Systems: 2025 Commercial Project of the Year Finalist
How Specialty Foundation Systems Delivered a Critical Infrastructure Solution in Northern Montana
When a cutting-edge Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project was developed just outside Glacier National Park, the goal was simple: create a sustainable, efficient, and durable energy foundation in one of the nation’s most unpredictable environments. The project stores excess wind-generated energy during low-demand hours and redistributes it to the electrical grid during peak demand—helping stabilize renewable power use in the region.
Specialty Foundation Systems (SFS), an ECP partner installer, was chosen to engineer and install the foundation system for the massive Tesla Mega Pack installation. This project was submitted for ECP’s Project of the Year—and for good reason.
The Challenge: Energy Infrastructure in Remote Terrain
Constructing a large-scale energy storage facility in northern Montana required a foundation solution capable of overcoming:
- Rugged, remote project location
- Limited concrete availability and transport challenges
- Harsh winter temperatures (as cold as -40°F)
- Aggressive construction timeline
- Marginal soil conditions
- Heavy structural loads from Tesla battery systems
Traditional concrete foundations simply weren’t feasible, both logistically and economically. Helical piles were the clear choice.
Why Helical Piles Were Selected
Helical piles offer major advantages for industrial renewable installations like BESS projects. SFS chose helical piles due to:
- Faster installation and immediate load capacity
- Lower transportation and labor costs
- Minimally invasive construction
- Predictable performance in weak soils
- Reduced weather scheduling risks
Installed Foundation System Specs
Helical piles offer major advantages for industrial renewable installations like BESS projects. SFS chose helical piles due to:
- 350 helical piles
- Triple 18” helix piles
- 3.5″ diameter
- 15 feet long
- Designed to support:
- 43 Tesla Mega Pack 2XL batteries
- 22 electrical transformers
This advanced helical pile system delivered long-term stability and load-bearing capacity for a critical renewable power system.
Extreme Weather and Installation Conditions
Building during the winter of 2024–2025 presented major environmental obstacles:
- Operating temperatures averaged 10–30°F
- Cold snaps reached –40°F
- Multiple shutdowns were required for crew safety
Even under constant weather delays, SFS still completed the project ahead of schedule, demonstrating exceptional logistics and coordination.
Precision Foundation Work: No Margin for Error
Because of the structural demands of BESS infrastructure, installation tolerances were extremely tight:
- Vertical tolerance: 3/8”
- Horizontal tolerance: 3”
To achieve this level of accuracy, SFS used:
- GPS surveying
- Laser leveling systems
- A custom battery pile template
- A custom-engineered skid steer pile-guide
- Traditional string line and plumb bob verification
Every pile was aligned, cut to height, torqued to specifications, and installed for exact elevation and spacing. There were no shortcuts—only precision engineering.
Project Result
Despite the remote location and extreme environmental conditions:
- The installation was finished ahead of schedule
- All tolerances and design specs were achieved
- The client was very satisfied with the results
- The BESS system is now supporting renewable power distribution in the region
This project stands as a great example of how helical piles solve real-world engineering problems in renewable infrastructure.
Why This Project Matters for the Future of Renewable Foundation Design
Battery Energy Storage Systems are rapidly expanding in renewable energy markets, and foundation solutions must be reliable, quick, and resistant to environmental variables. This project highlights:
- How helical piles reduce construction timelines
- How installers can eliminate concrete curing delays
- The cost-efficiency of specialty foundation systems
- Their scalability for remote utility projects
As renewable infrastructure grows, helical pile foundations continue to establish themselves as a go-to solution for high-load, difficult-terrain applications.
