Coastal Foundation Solutions: 2025 Commercial Project of the Year Finalist
Coastal Foundation Solutions Delivers Innovative Sewer Treatment Plant Foundation in Florida
Coastal Foundation Solutions (CFS) recently tackled a challenging sewer treatment plant foundation project in Lakeland, Florida, ensuring the structural integrity of critical infrastructure in a complex soil environment. With deep foundation requirements and proximity to a flowing creek, this project highlights the precision, planning, and expertise required for high-stakes engineering solutions.
This project was submitted for ECP’s Project of the Year, showcasing the capabilities of CFS in partnership with ECP.
Project Challenges: Deep Foundations in Difficult Soil
The sewer treatment plant foundation posed multiple construction and design challenges:
- Proposed foundation located 25 feet below grade and near a flowing creek
- Unpredictable subsurface soil conditions requiring extended pile lengths
- Areas requiring pre-drilling to secure tension capacities
- Initial pile design depth of 21 feet exceeded due to soil anomalies
- Tight schedule requiring minimal downtime for the concrete contractor
Traditional foundation methods were not feasible, making helical piles the ideal solution for this demanding project.
Helical Pile Solution and Installation
CFS installed a total of 670 helical piles at strategic locations throughout the plant foundation. Key details include:
- Pile depths ranged from 15 to 63 feet to reach stable soil strata
- Structural slab thickness: 2 feet
- Piles engineered to support loads exceeding 80,000 lbs
- Use of digital torque indicator monitoring to verify design efficiency
- Test piles subjected to compression and tension load testing, exceeding performance expectations
- Extensive soil analysis guided adjustments to pile placement and depth
Project Highlights
- Collaboration with structural engineering team Dave Baker & Associates and geotechnical experts
- Efficient handling of subsurface anomalies, requiring 1,500 pile extensions
- Completion of full foundation scope within five weeks
- Enabled immediate concrete work, avoiding delays from curing time
Precision Engineering and Monitoring
Every helical pile was monitored during installation to ensure compliance with load and torque specifications:
- Torque and depth measurements confirmed bearing capacity targets
- Geotechnical predictive monitoring validated pile performance in varying soil conditions
- Pre-drilled areas provided extra tension support where needed
- Full-scale installation maintained structural integrity and allowed for a seamless handoff to the concrete contractor
The result is a robust foundation capable of supporting the sewer treatment plant for decades, even in challenging environmental conditions.
