What Makes Concentric Piers Different?

When most people classify foundation piers or piles, they do it by material (steel vs. concrete) or how the load is supported (helical piers vs. push piers). There is another method, however: the location of the pier’s bracket on the home’s foundation. This is what makes concentric piers different from the common eccentric ones.

What is a Concentric Pier?

Technically, a concentric pier is one in which the axis of the bracket and pile is in line with the applied load. Functionally, this means the bracket and pier are directly beneath the footing or load rather than attaching the bracket to the side of the foundation.

It is, therefore, in the position to provide the greatest support for the foundation.

Which of ECP’s Piers are Concentric?

Earth Contact Products manufactures a concentric version of its steel push pier system. The PPB-200 and PPB-250 are designed to be driven deeper into the soil than past concentric piers, ensuring that the system will be able to lift and support the building on top of it.

Like all of ECP’s piers, they are made from American-made galvanized steel and can be installed down to rock or a verified load-bearing stratum of soil with portable equipment and with little to no vibration.

The PPB-200 has an ultimate capacity of 50,000 pounds while the PPB-250’s is 54,000 pounds. Each has a standard lift of four inches but is fully adjustable with unlimited lift capability. They also eliminate bottle jacks and shims from the lifting process, ensuring structural support without over-lifting the building.

Where are Concentric Piers best used?

The engineers at ECP specifically designed the company’s concentric pier system for situations where placing the them directly below the load or footings provides a decided advantage. These include:

  • Within crawl spaces
  • In areas with limited access
  • Homes with slab-on-grade foundations

ECP’s concentric piers are not just for homes, though. The system is sturdy enough for use in commercial foundation work as well.
